Haiti Food Crisis Update: Needs, Outlook and Response
Haiti continues to face one of the most severe food crises globally, with more than half of the population experiencing acute food insecurity, driven by escalating violence, economic disruption, displacement, and repeated climate shocks. Agricultural production has been significantly constrained, while insecurity and rising costs continue to limit access to food and livelihoods, further eroding households’ resilience.
Forecasts from the World Meteorological Organization indicate a high likelihood of El Niño developing in 2026, associated with above-normal temperatures and shifts in rainfall patterns. In Haiti, where food security and livelihoods depend on rainfed agriculture, and coping capacities are already severely stretched, these conditions risk further undermining food production and deepening food insecurity.
Against this backdrop, FAO and WFP are scaling up operational response to save lives and protect livelihoods. By implementing emergency food assistance alongside rapid agricultural support, investments are seeking to restore local food production and reduce reliance on negative coping strategies. This briefing will provide an update on the evolving situation, provide an overview of priority needs, and highlight response actions, including anticipatory action, at this critical juncture.
