Hunger Hotspots, El Niño and Joint Scaling Up of Anticipatory Response

An El Niño event is developing at a time when the escalating Middle East crisis is pushing millions more people into hunger. At this critical moment, FAO and WFP are issuing, for the first time, a joint forward-looking appeal for anticipatory action at scale for the 2026 El Niño. This marks a shift from reacting to crises to acting before they unfold, drawing on the complementary strengths of both agencies.

This will be preceded by a presentation of the latest Hunger Hotspots report (June–October 2026) by the Global Network Against Food Crises (GNAFC), offering a forward-looking analysis of where and why acute food insecurity is expected to worsen. The report identifies key countries and drivers offering early warnings to guide timely humanitarian action and help prevent further deterioration.

Join us to be among the first to engage with this forward-looking effort and shape the discussion.

Speakers:

Jean-Martin Bauer, Director, Food Security and Nutrition Analysis Service, WFP
Rein Paulsen, Director, Emergencies and Resilience, FAO
Richard Choularton, Director, Climate and Resilience Service, WFP
