The Socio-Economic Development Division (SEDD) is organizing the Inter-Regional Policy Workshop on Strengthening Inclusive and Shock-Responsive Social Protection Systems in Africa scheduled for 7 to 9 October 2026 at the UNCC, Addis Ababa. This event is in collaboration with UNDESA and ESCWA.
The workshop will seek to address the critical capacity gaps in designing, financing, and implementing inclusive, evidence-based and crisis responsive social protection systems while utilizing timely and disaggregated data and measures such as the Multidimensional Poverty Index to leave no one behind. It will validate knowledge and guidelines that aim to support African countries in translating multidimensional poverty concepts into practical tools for social protection implementation with particular focus on strengthening the Guidelines for Operationalizing the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) for Adaptive Social Protection: A Framework for Action. The guidelines were developed in partnership with OPHI under the joint ECA, DESA and ESCWA project on “Strengthening Capacity for evidence-based Social Protection Policies for responding to the triple global crisis in fuel, food and finance”.
