Description

The UNESCO Forum on ‘Higher Education in Africa: A Driver for Sustainable Development,’ from 10-11 December in Nairobi Kenya, is organized as a key contribution to the African Union (AU) Year of Education 2024.

The Forum brings together higher education institutions, young people, skills providers and partners to reflect on, and celebrate, how Africa's higher education research, innovation and tertiary skills eco-systems are contributing solutions for local, national and regional sustainable development challenges - specifically through UNESCO's flagship programme ‘Campus Africa' and the UNESCO-China Funds in Trust project (CFIT III) which supports higher technical education in AFrica. Operating under UNESCO's global priority on Africa, it aims to contribute to the vision outlined in Agenda 2063 – ‘The Africa We Want’.

The Forum is also organized as a follow-up to the World Higher Education Conference (WHEC2022) and guided by the Higher Education Roadmap – ‘Transforming Higher Education: A roadmap to advance towards 2030 and beyond’ while providing an opportunity to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Revised Convention on the Recognition of Studies, Certificates, Diplomas, Degrees and Other Academic Qualifications in Higher Education in African States (Addis Convention).

Finally, the Forum is guided by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its pledge to 'leave no one behind', takes into consideration the report of the International Commission on the Futures of Education 'Reimagining Our Futures Together: A new social contract for education' and the outcomes of the International Forum of UNESCO Chairs and Partners in Addis Ababa, 2024.
