BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES

Pursuant to United Nations General Assembly resolution 58/220 adopted on 23 December 2003, the International Day of South-South Cooperation has been marked annually since 2004 in recognition of South-South cooperation as an important element of international cooperation for development. Observed globally on 12 September, the Day commemorates the adoption of the Buenos Aires Plan of Action for Promoting and Implementing Technical Cooperation among Developing Countries (BAPA) in 1978 and provides an opportunity to reflect on the value and benefits offered by South-South cooperation.

In this connection, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and the Thailand International Cooperation Agency (TICA) will co-organize the commemoration of the United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region, on 12 September 2024 from 10.00 to 12.00 hours (UTC+7) at the United Nations Conference Centre, Bangkok (CR-3) and online to contribute to the following:

Share latest developments and examples of South-South cooperation for advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and forge closer links among South-South champions in Asia and the Pacific.
