Celebration of the Routes of Enslaved Peoples Programme 's 30th Anniversary
In 2024, the Routes of Enslaved Peoples Programme will celebrate its 30th anniversary.
UNESCO's Social and Human Sciences Sector invites stakeholders worldwide to attend a key moment in the Organization's history. Founded in 1994, the programme aims to address the legacies of slavery and the consequences of deeply entrenched social and economic injustice.
Activities will be organized throughout the year by UNESCO, its Member States and its partners, to:
- Take stock of the programme’s achievements.
- Define its new orientation based on current trends and global crisis with the aim of creating impact and producing change.
- Join forces with the Permanent Forum on People of African Descent, as part of the International Decade for People of African Descent (2015-2024).
- Mobilize impacted communities, experts and intellectuals, and the wider public.
- Gather leading scholars, intellectuals, artists and civil society actors who analyze the intersections in between enslavement and current societal challenges to identify possible solutions.
