Les Mains de la Paix
The Opening Ceremony will be on 5 November 2019 at 12:30 p.m. in the Exhibition Gallery of the Palais des Nations. The gates open 30 minutes before the event. The exhibition will be held from 28 October to 5 November 2019. The opening will be followed by a reception.
The Department of Cultural Activities of the United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization Liaison Office (UNESCO) will host at the Palais des Nations an artistic exhibition which presents a series of portraits by Séverine Desmarest of famous or anonymous personalities, who work daily in favor of peace.
The diversity of their range of action illustrates the vastness of the territories yet to conquer in order to establish UNESCO’s mission: “Since wars begin in the minds of men and women, it is in the minds of men and women that the defenses of peace must be constructed.”
The paths of peace are numerous and each person portrayed in this exhibition, follows these roads so that light always prevails over darkness. Fighting poverty, conflict prevention, sustainable development, equal opportunities, advocating for women’s rights, education and childhood protection, represent some of the struggles towards a new humanism.
The ardor and fervor of these every-day-heroes, embody the spirit of UNESCO’s actions for peace and education. That is why UNESCO has naturally joined the artistic process of photographer Séverine Desmarest, since the beginning of this project in 2004. Today she presents us with a photographic tribute of those who strive to offer hope for a better future to the most defenseless. This exhibition is an invitation for young generations to commit themselves to human dignity and to act for change in favor of peace.
