From 2006-2016, the Global Action Plan for Influenza Vaccines (GAP) catalysed efforts to reduce the shortage and inequitable access to vaccines in the event of an influenza pandemic. The overall goal was to develop the global production capacity to immunize 70% of the global population with two doses, which equates to approximately 10 billion doses, within six months of the vaccine virus strain transfer to vaccine manufacturers. This overarching goal of the GAP was supported by three objectives: (1) increase evidence-based seasonal vaccine use; (2) expand vaccine production and regulatory capacities; and (3) promote research and development for improved vaccines. At the closing of the GAP, the Advisory Group recommendations to the DG included continued WHO leadership and coordination in identifying and addressing the root causes for influenza vaccine hesitancy. This meeting will consider influenza immunization within the context of global issues of affordability and acceptability. Objectives of the Meeting: 1. Review vaccine hesitancy evidence and research gaps with a focus on influenza vaccination in target groups (i.e. pregnant women and health care workers); 2. Review evidence-based strategies to increase influenza vaccination; 3. Map internal work on influenza vaccine hesitancy, acceptance, and demand; and 4. Identify synergies, gaps, and priorities for WHO to better improve influenza immunization. Expected Outcomes: 1. Increased awareness of the latest evidence related to influenza vaccine acceptance and demand; 2. Draft mapping of past, current, and anticipated WHO work in this space to identify gaps and opportunities for collaboration; 3. Initial planning document that highlights priority activities for WHO related to influenza vaccine acceptance and demand; and 4. Outline of potential approaches for WHO to advocate for increased global influenza immunization.
