The Basic Training Course is the first step (Tier 1) in UNODA’s multi-tiered training programme for Qualified Experts nominated to the United Nations Secretary-General’s Mechanism for the Investigation of Alleged Use of Chemical, Biological and Toxin Weapons (UNSGM). The course focuses on providing nominated experts with a common basis for operation that would enable them, should they be deployed, to work as a United Nations team within a UN mission investigating an alleged use of biological weapons. The course will familiarize participants with the structure and functions of the UNSGM, the process for initiating and conducting investigations, and the technical procedures and requirements involved. The course will also build essential practical competencies required for UNSGM missions, including mission planning and reporting, sample and evidence collection and handling, information gathering and documentation, and risk assessment.
