The catastrophic Bhotekoshi-Trishuli flash floods of August 2026 were one of the most significant disaster events in Nepal's recent history. Triggered by a large rock-ice avalanche event in the high Himalaya, the disaster caused extensive loss of life and severe damage to transport networks, hydropower facilities, border infrastructure, and local livelihoods along the Bhotekoshi-Trishuli corridor. The disaster demonstrated how hazards originating in remote mountain areas can rapidly cascade through interconnected natural and human systems, creating far-reaching impacts on communities, infrastructure, and economic activities.

These challenges are not unique to Nepal. Across Asia and the Pacific, countries are experiencing increasingly complex disaster risk landscapes characterized by cascading impacts, interconnected infrastructure systems and growing exposure of people and assets. At the same time, advances in Earth observation, satellite technologies, artificial intelligence, digital connectivity and predictive analytics offer new opportunities to strengthen risk monitoring, forecasting, preparedness and anticipatory action.

This regional dialogue complements Nepal's high-level engagement at the Sagarmatha to the Sea: A Call to Action for a Climate-Resilient Future special meeting during the eighty-first session of the United Nations General Assembly. While the General Assembly discussion aimed to strengthen political commitment and international cooperation around mountain-to-sea climate risks, this Regional Forum will focus on practical actions and technological solutions, including space applications, Earth observation, and multi-hazard early warning systems, to strengthen resilience in mountain and downstream communities.

Held on the margins of the Fifth Ministerial Conference on Space Applications for Sustainable Development in Asia and the Pacific, this Regional Forum will examine lessons from Nepal's experience and their relevance for countries confronting increasingly complex and interconnected disaster risks. While grounded in Nepal's experience, the discussion will focus on lessons applicable to downstream communities throughout the Hindu Kush Himalaya and other vulnerable countries across Asia and the Pacific facing increasing climate-related hazards.
