Libya is launching a national process to define a vision and priorities for food systems transformation. The process will bring together relevant national stakeholders to examine the current food system, build consensus around the areas requiring action, and identify priorities to guide future policy and investment. The process will build on existing national priorities and policy frameworks, including Libya’s National Food Security Strategy 2025–2035, and provide an opportunity to further strengthen institutional coherence. This two-day national workshop marks the first step in this process, providing a platform for stakeholder consultation and dialogue to inform the development of Libya’s vision and priorities for food systems transformation.
The main objectives of the workshop are to:
· Establish a shared understanding of Libya’s food system, including its main characteristics, challenges, interlinkages and sources of vulnerability and resilience.
· Bring together diverse perspectives, including those of relevant government institutions, food producers, civil society, academia and the private sector, with particular attention to the perspectives of smallholder farmers and producers, women, youth and vulnerable groups.
· Strengthen coherence and coordination across sectors involved in Libya’s food systems, recognizing the interlinkages between agriculture, water, environment, health, trade, markets and consumers, and other relevant policy areas.
· Identify priority areas for food systems transformation, building on existing national priorities and policy frameworks, including the National Food Security Strategy 2025–2035, and reflecting the perspectives and priorities of different stakeholders.
· Initiate the development of a shared national vision for food systems transformation, reflected in a Food Systems Transformation Pathway Document, and agree on next steps for the national process.
