Environment and Development Policy Section (EDPS)

The BBNJ Agreement recognizes the special requirements of developing States Parties, the special circumstances of small island developing States and of least developed countries, and the special interests and needs of landlocked developing countries, and requires that these be taken into account, including in the context of eligibility for access to funding under the Agreement. Furthermore, the BBNJ Agreement includes provisions on capacity-building and the transfer of marine technology to support developing States in benefitting from and implementing the Agreement.

This Workshop will provide an opportunity to strengthen cooperation and coordination in support of the implementation of the BBNJ Agreement and support the alignment of national and regional frameworks with emerging global commitments. It is envisaged that the Workshop will help to promote States’ ownership of ocean governance processes, and to foster a shared vision for conserving and sustainably using marine biodiversity and ensuring healthier, more resilient ocean ecosystems that support the well-being, livelihoods, and sustainable development of the people across the regions targeted by the Workshop.
