More than a decade has passed since the adoption of the Warsaw Framework for REDD+ in 2013. Since then, more than 65 developing countries have submitted their forest reference (emission) levels (FRELs/FRLs), and many of these countries also submitted national REDD+ strategies, safeguards information summaries, and REDD+ results. Over this period, countries have also accumulated significant technical expertise and practical experience that can benefit other REDD+ countries through peer-to-peer exchange.
At the same time, the landscape of REDD+ finance and governance has become increasingly complex. Multiple financial institutions, mechanisms, organizations and actors are engaged in supporting REDD+ activities. The operationalization of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, together with the continued development of jurisdictional REDD+ standards, crediting mechanisms and results-based finance programmes, has created new opportunities while also making it increasingly challenging for REDD+ countries to navigate the available options and ensure coherence across different processes. To increase ambition towards halting and reversing deforestation and forest degradation by 2030, it is essential to strengthen knowledge exchange among REDD+ stakeholders.
To respond to this need, the UNFCCC secretariat launched the REDD+ Community of Practice (REDD+ CP) in 2025. As part of the REDD+ CP, the first REDD+ meeting for Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries and the first REDD+ Global Summit were held in December 2025 and May 2026, respectively. These meetings have provided valuable opportunities for countries to exchange practical experiences, discuss common challenges and strengthen professional networks. Building on these experiences, the second REDD+ Community of Practice regional meeting will be convened in the Asia-Pacific region in 2026. This meeting will provide a regional platform for continued peer-to-peer learning, technical exchange and networking among REDD+ experts.
