The Celestial Sphere – Woodrow Wilson Memorial, inaugurated in 1939, marks the 20th anniversary of the League of Nations and honors Woodrow Wilson for his role in its creation. Designed by Paul H. Manship, this Art Deco work blends artistic mastery with symbolic diplomacy. Cast in Florence and installed in Geneva, it remains a lasting emblem of international cooperation.
After decades of deterioration, a full restoration (2024–2026), funded privately and led by the Facilities Management Section (FMS), returned the monument to its original brilliance.
The works included: Structural restoration; Reflecting pool rehabilitation with natural filtration; Repair of the rotation mechanism; Conservation of 64 mythological figures; Recreation of the celestial map with silver stars; New lighting and site redesign.
The reopening of the Celestial Sphere marks the restoration of a historic landmark, as well as a symbolic milestone for the Palais des Nations, bringing together biodiversity, anti-racism, LGBTQI+, and gender focal points, the event reflects a broad and inclusive vision of multilateralism.
This gathering highlights the links between people, nature, and the wider cosmos, underscoring the importance of inclusion, dialogue, and shared responsibility in shaping a more equitable and sustainable future. Like a constellation, it brings together diverse actors, perspectives, and communities, each distinct, yet interconnected.
