Background
The 69th Commission for Status of Women reaffirmed in March 2025, that gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls are essential for sustainable development and to achieve the pledge “to leave no one behind”.
As we mark thirty years since the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the global landscape for gender equality presents a complex interplay of setbacks and advances. On the one hand, 180 million more girls enrolled in education, women became political decision-makers as well as corporate leaders, the global prevalence on child marriage was going down, albeit slowly. Yet, as the world took steps forward, societal transformations and increased conflicts and natural disasters have had an undeniable impact on gender equality, leading to a back lash against the rights of women and girls around the world
Gender Equality is a Global Priority for UNESCO. This priority shapes the programme direction and impact of the institution and guides the collaboration with all UNESCO stakeholders.
Uzbekistan as an active Member State of UNESCO has consistently supported efforts to eliminate gender disparities and to advance the rights of women and girls in all spheres of life.
This side-event, organized in the framework of the 43rd session of the UNESCO General Conference in Samarkand, is a joint initiative between Uzbekistan and UNESCO’s Division for Gender Equality. It aims to share successful initiatives from around the world and from across UNESCO’s mandate to achieve gender equality through education, sciences, culture, communication and information. It will include the participation of UNESCO and Uzbekistan leaders as well as UNESCO’s partners on the ground.
The event will have simultaneous interpretation in English, French, Spanish and Uzbek.
