The official side event “The Role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Museums” will take place during the 43rd session of the UNESCO General Conference in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, on 1 November 2025 from 9:30am to 12:30pm. The side event precedes an international conference on the same theme from 2pm to 4:30pm funded and organized by the Uzbekistan Art and Culture Development Foundation in partnership with the Ministry of Culture of France, Guimet - National Museum of Asian Arts, and UNESCO.
These international events will explore the transformative role of artificial intelligence in museum practice, with a focus on ethical governance, diversity, cultural sustainability, and inclusive innovation. Guided by the UNESCO 2015 Recommendation concerning the Protection and Promotion of Museums and Collections and the 2021 Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence, the events will convene museum directors and professionals with AI developers to examine how AI is reshaping the ways museums research, collect, conserve, interpret, and engage with communities and collections.
