As part of a side event during UNESCO’s General Conference to be held on 5 November 2025, the Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information (CI) Sector, Tawfik Jelassi, will present to Member States the new edition of the World Trends in Freedom of Expression and Media Development Report: Journalism Shaping a World at Peace. He will highlight its main trends, key data, and findings, as well as the challenges ahead for freedom of expression and media development worldwide, as the world enters the final five years to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Since 2014, the World Trends Report (WTR) has provided Member States and stakeholders with rigorous insights into developments in media freedom, pluralism, independence, and the safety of journalists, as well as in media development. This landmark Report offers a unique and comprehensive overview of key changes, opportunities, and challenges, while also outlining pathways forward to addressing them.
