In recent years, air pollution has emerged as a critical environmental and public health concern in Southeast Asia, with far-reaching implications for the region's sustainable development. Recognizing the transboundary nature of this challenge, the Lao People's Democratic Republic is taking proactive steps to address the issue through enhanced regional cooperation and coordinated national action.

To this end, an inter-ministerial workshop titled "Promoting Regional Cooperation on Air Pollution to Improve Air Quality Globally" is being organized in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic. This programme, developed by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), provides a comprehensive framework for addressing air pollution in the region through coordinated efforts and evidence-based policymaking.

This high-level meeting brings together key stakeholders from four ministries of Lao PDR: the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the Ministry of Energy and Mine, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, and the Ministry of Public Work and Transport. The diverse representation underscores the multifaceted nature of air pollution and the need for a holistic approach to tackle it effectively.

The workshop aims to foster collaboration and knowledge-sharing among these ministries, with a particular focus on implementing the ESCAP Regional Action Programme on Air Pollution. This programme, developed by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), provides a comprehensive framework for addressing air pollution in the region through coordinated efforts and evidence-based policymaking.

Participants will explore various aspects of air quality management, including sustainable agricultural practices, clean energy transitions, environmental monitoring and regulation, sustainable transport solutions, and the integration of information and communication technologies (ICT) for data collection and digital data analytics. By bringing together these diverse perspectives, the workshop seeks to identify synergies, address potential conflicts, and develop a cohesive national strategy that aligns with regional goals. The outcomes of this inter-ministerial dialogue are expected to inform Laos' contributions to regional air pollution mitigation efforts and strengthen the country's capacity to implement the ESCAP Regional Action Programme effectively.

This workshop represents a significant step towards enhancing regional cooperation on air pollution and demonstrates Laos' commitment to improving air quality not only within its borders but also contributing to global efforts to combat this pressing environmental challenge.
