The Resolution on "Sustainable Nitrogen Management" adopted at the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA5.2) in March 2022 calls for each country to develop an action plan for sustainable nitrogen management and encourages the acceleration of national policies to significantly reduce nitrogen emissions by 2030 and beyond. This informal coordination meeting for Sustainable Nitrogen Management scheduled to take place in Bangkok on March 3 and 4, 2025. This meeting, organized by the Ministry of the Environment, Japan (MOEJ), aims to bring together key stakeholders and experts in the field of nitrogen management to discuss several important objectives.
The primary focus of the meeting is to consider the future work and strategy of the Global Partnership on Nutrient Management (GPNM). Additionally, participants will explore potential areas of cooperation between the UNEP Working Group on Nitrogen (WGN) and GPNM, seeking to strengthen their collaborative efforts in addressing nitrogen-related challenges. Another key objective is to examine the possibility of collaboration between UNEP nitrogen communities, such as WGN and GPNM, and regional initiatives like the Acid Deposition Monitoring Network in East Asia (EANET) and the Regional Action Plan on Air Pollution (RAPAP) by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP). This discussion aims to leverage existing regional mechanisms to contribute to ongoing work in nitrogen management.
The meeting will also serve as a platform to identify areas of cooperation in preparation for the upcoming seventh session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7). Participants will discuss potential events, collaborations, and preparations for UNEA-7, with Pakistan sharing progress on their preparations for the assembly.
The scope of the meeting encompasses various aspects of sustainable nitrogen management, including policy, research, and regional cooperation. It brings together co-chairs of WGN and GPNM, experts from related countries, and representatives from international organizations. The discussions will cover topics such as atmospheric deposition, air pollution control, and the implementation of UN resolutions on sustainable nitrogen management.
