In the past 10 years, surveillance operations and capacity of the Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System (GISRS) have been advanced significantly. Correspondingly increased is the surveillance data reporting needs. FluMart, recently developed as RespiMart, has facilitated the exchange, harmonization, and consolidation of influenza, RSV and SARS-CoV-2 surveillance data from GISRS (stored in dedicated databases; e.g., FluNet, fluID, PISA, and HAI) along with related analytical outputs for the assessment of the global situation of influenza and other respiratory viruses.
Complete and timely reporting of surveillance data for influenza and other respiratory viruses (ORVs) with epidemic and pandemic potential remains paramount for global situational awareness and monitoring, risk assessment and response, and supports vaccine, therapeutic and diagnostic development. Nonetheless, processing and sharing of complete, consistent and timely data remains a challenge in several settings. In addition, the data structure and data analysis may need refinement (e.g., fostering case-based data reporting) to support the current and future needs of the GISRS expansion.
