Join us for the opening event of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation's Human Rights Hub in Geneva.
FNF's Human Rights Hub was recently established to to promote respect for and compliance with human rights, and to strengthen the rules-based international legal order. It will support human rights defenders and civil society partners in their pursuit of the rule of law and help them connect – with each other and with UN organizations in Geneva.
In our world today, democracies face increasing sets of internal and external challenges. Weakening Supreme Courts, increased barriers to accessing justice, shrinking spaces for lawyers and legal professionals to conduct their business, are among the tools that weaken the checks and balances necessary to the rule of law everywhere. An estimated 5.1 billion people, two-thirds of the Earth’s population, lack meaningful access to justice.
As the people that work tirelessly to claim and protect their rights and the rights of others continue to sacrifice their lives for justice and democracy, paying tribute to them through this event will lay the foundation for the Friedrich Naumann Foundation’s future human rights work in Geneva.
The event will feature welcoming remarks by Anne Brasseur, FNF Board Member and former President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
The keynote speech will be held by the German Minister of Justice, Dr. Marco Buschmann.
Two lawyers from Zimbabwe and Russia will share their lived experiences.
Judge Stefan Waspi from the Special Criminal Court of the Central African Republic will provide invaluable insights to the topic.
Ambassador Stasch from Germany will provide concluding remarks.
A lunch reception will follow the event at the Vieux-Bois restaurant.
