Albinism Awareness Day
In accordance with General Assembly resolution 69/170, which established 13 June as International Albinism Awareness Day (IAAD), the United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG) will host a cultural event to mark this significant day. This year, we celebrate the 10th anniversary of the resolution, highlighting a decade of advocacy and advancements in understanding and supporting persons with albinism.
To commemorate this milestone, we will revisit “White Ebony” by Patricia Willocq, an exhibition first presented at UNOG 10 years ago that beautifully captures the lives and experiences of individuals with albinism. The event is scheduled for 20 June 2024, from 17:00 to 19:00, at the Palais des Nations, in Building E. Activities will begin with a tour of the photo exhibition, followed by opening remarks and speeches from guests, Member States sponsors, international organizations, and the artist herself.
A keynote address by a person living with albinism will share personal stories, achievements, and the challenges faced by those living with albinism. The official opening of the exhibition and a reception will conclude the event.
We gratefully acknowledge the financial and logistical support from Wallonia-Brussels in Geneva - Permanent Mission of Belgium, the Global Albinism Alliance (GAA), the UN Independent Expert on the Rights of Persons with Albinism, Ms. Muluka-Anne Miti-Drummond, and the ILO.
