The United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) is pleased to invite you to the Technology Breakfast on Nanotechnology and International Security.

Advancements in various technology areas, such as nanotechnology, microchips, cloud computing and 5G, are reshaping the digital landscape and driving innovation in information and communications technologies (ICTs), artificial intelligence (AI) and autonomous systems. While progress has been made in addressing the security implications of ICTs and AI within various multilateral processes, there has been relatively less focus on the underlying technologies that are enabling or driving their further development.

To bridge this knowledge gap, UNIDIR has launched the Enabling Technologies and International Security: A Compendium (2023 Edition), dedicated to identifying and analyzing the most salient advancements in enabling technologies. Building upon this compendium, UNIDIR is organizing a series of technology breakfasts to delve deeper into the international security implications of specific enabling technology areas.

The first session of the series will focus on the crucial topic of nanotechnology. At the nanoscale, unique and often novel properties emerge as a result of quantum effects and surface behavior, leading to innovations in advanced sensing, computing and communications. The technology breakfast will provide participants with a thorough understanding of the most recent advancements in the field of nanotechnology and their potential impacts on international security. The briefing will commence with an overview of UNIDIR's research findings, followed by a brief presentation by an expert speaker, and conclude with an interactive question and answer session with the audience.
