Journalism in the face of the Environmental Crisis
From May 2-4 2024, UNESCO and the government of Chile will host the 31st edition of World Press Freedom Day in Santiago, at the Gabriela Mistral Centre.
Celebrated every 3 of May, this year’s theme for the Day will be “A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the face of the Environmental Crisis” and focus on the importance of journalism and freedom of expression in the context of the current global environmental crisis. The global commemorative conference aims to highlight the significant role played by the press, journalism, access, and dissemination of information to ensure and secure a sustainable future that respects the rights of individuals and their diversity of voices, as well as gender equality.
World Press Freedom Day 2024 is an important opportunity for the international community to collectively reflect on these multidimensional challenges, the fundamental role of journalism, and the transformative power that reliable information has to protect our planet, achieve sustainable development, and consolidate democracies. Partners from the media, academia, and civil society will also organize events in Santiago and around the world centered on this year’s theme.

World Press Freedom Day 2024 will also be the occasion to award the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize, which recognizes and honours the contributions of journalists, particularly those who risk their lives to provide essential information to the public.

El periodismo ante la crisis ambiental
Entre el 2 y el 4 de mayo, Chile y la UNESCO acogerán la trigésima primera Conferencia del Día Mundial de la Libertad de Prensa en Santiago, Chile, en el Centro Gabriela Mistral.
Celebrado cada 3 de mayo, el tema de este año para el Día será "Prensa para el planeta: El periodismo ante la crisis ambiental" y se centrará en la importancia del periodismo y la libertad de expresión en el contexto de la actual crisis medioambiental mundial. La conferencia conmemorativa mundial pretende destacar el importante papel que desempeñan la prensa, el periodismo, el acceso y la difusión de la información para garantizar y asegurar un futuro sostenible que respete los derechos de las personas y su diversidad de voces, así como la igualdad de género.
El Día Mundial de la Libertad de Prensa 2024 es una importante oportunidad para que la comunidad internacional reflexione colectivamente sobre estos desafíos multidimensionales, el papel fundamental del periodismo y el poder transformador que tiene la información confiable para proteger nuestro planeta, lograr un desarrollo sostenible y consolidar las democracias. Los socios de los medios de comunicación, el mundo académico y la sociedad civil también organizarán eventos en Santiago y en todo el mundo centrados en el tema de este año.

El Día Mundial de la Libertad de Prensa 2024 también será la ocasión para atribuir el Premio Mundial UNESCO/Guillermo Cano de Libertad de Prensa, que reconoce y honra las contribuciones de los periodistas, en particular de aquellos que arriesgan sus vidas para proporcionar información esencial al público.
