In 2021, ESCAP and its member states adopted the Action Plan of the Asia-Pacific Information Superhighway (APIS) initiative for 2022-2026. APIS is a region-wide intergovernmental platform that aims to promote digital connectivity, digital technology, and data use in order to accelerate digital transformation in the region. Serving as a blueprint for regional cooperation, the Action Plan 2022-2026 highlights digital inclusion as a crucial catalyst for advancing the digital economy.
The pervasiveness of digital divides and development inequalities within and across nations and the region can be attributed to the numerous elements that need to be addressed simultaneously. To address these challenges and overcome common issues, the “Regional Workshop on Community-based Digital Connectivity and Digital Inclusion in the Asia-Pacific Region” will bring together member States, AP-IS members, and other UN agencies. By sharing experiences and knowledge on digital inclusion at community, national and regional levels, the workshop will facilitate the participants to discover innovative solutions for filling the gaps with following objectives:
• To enhance understanding of good regional/national practices and lessons learned on community-based digital connectivity and digital inclusion in the framework of the Asia-Pacific Information Superhighway Initiative (APIS).
• To explore partnerships and cooperation on digital inclusion, digital financial/micro-financing systems with women entrepreneurship, digital technology, and transformation towards an inclusive digital economy.
• To explore concepts of new project proposals on digital financing, AI, and connectivity”
