UNESCO, in collaboration with its Member States and partners, will celebrate International Literacy Day (ILD) on 8 September 2023 under the theme of “Promoting literacy for a world in transition: Building the foundation for sustainable and peaceful societies”.

Building on the momentum, knowledge, and insights generated through the recent work, including the Seventh International Conference on Adult Education (Marrakech, June 2022), the UNESCO’s Futures of Education Initiative, and the Transforming Education Summit (New York, September 2022) convened by the UN Secretary-General, ILD2023, sheds light on the centrality and transformative power of literacy for shaping a future world with a greater degree of social, economic, and environmental justice and peace.

In this context, we are pleased to invite you to save the date for a global event which will take place on 8 September 2023 at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France (Room II). The global celebration will include the UNESCO International Literacy Prizes award ceremony to announce this year's outstanding prizewinning programmes.

Please kindly note that presential participation in this event is by invitation only. However, the global conference will be organized in a hybrid format, using English, French and Spanish and will be open to anyone who may wish to follow the discussions virtually. The ILD2023 concept note, and the agenda of the global event will be shared with you closer to the event.

We would like to invite you to visit the dedicated webpages for the International Literacy Day 2023 and  and the UNESCO International Literacy Prizes, on which we will upload the global event-related information, highlights of country-level celebrations, and other related materials to the ILD/ILP2023.
