d. White Paper on Blockchain in Trade Facilitation White Paper on Blockchain in Trade Facilitation Blockchain technology is one of the most talked about topics in the sphere of information technology as well as in the facilitation of electronic business. This technology has the potential to influence the way that we do business today, as its use expands to new areas. This White Paper explains the base principles of Blockchain in an attempt to ensure that all stakeholders use the same semantic understandings. It then explores Blockchain application in various sectors of activities from supply chain, transport and government services to healthcare, tourism and culture. This technology has the potential to facilitate cross-border trade, increase access to global value chains as well as support the effectiveness of government services. As part of its global mission to help facilitate trade and provide guidance on electronic business, the United Nations Centre for Trade Facilitation and Electronic Business (UN/CEFACT) has been studying how this technology can help towards the digital transformation of economies. Blockchain can help trade facilitation because of the following characteristics: it is immutable (nearly impossible to change once transactions are written), automated (actions can be automatically executed) and historized (have full transaction history, which can be used to track and trace). This White Paper is the first in a series of UN/CEFACT deliverables around Blockchain which are available on the website: www.unece.org/cefact.
