This purpose of the meeting is to provide final review for an update of the WHO publication Guidelines for Poison Control. This guidance aims to assist countries in establishing or strengthening facilities for the prevention and management of poisoning. It provides information about the various functions of a poisons centre and the resources that would be required to fulfill these functions. The document does not aim to promote a specific model of a poisons centre but to provide guidance that can be adapted to the conditions prevailing in each country. While nearly every developed country has at least one fully-functional poisons centre, few developing countries have such a centre. This is particularly true in the African and Western Pacific regions where less than one third of countries has a poisons centre. There is still, therefore, a demand for this book.
