DESCRIPTION:Basic sciences - chemistry\, physics\, mathematics\, and biolo
 gy - allow us to understand natural phenomena and drive innovation. Invest
 ing in these disciplines is essential to create the tools we need to addre
 ss global socio-economic and environmental challenges\, such as climate ch
 ange\, biodiversity loss\, the technology divide\, and water and energy cr
 ises.\n \nThe UNESCO-Russia Mendeleev International Prize in the Basic Sc
 iences was created in 2019 to foster scientific progress\, science popular
 ization and international cooperation in the basic sciences. It also comme
 morates the remarkable scientific heritage of Dimitri Ivanovitch Mendeleev
 \, father of the Periodic Table\, whose work played a fundamental role in 
 the future of chemistry\, physics\, biology\, astronomy and geochemistry 
 – but also in what is now termed sustainable development.\n \nIt is awa
 rded annually to two individuals winners for their breakthrough discoverie
 s\, outstanding innovations\, and avid promotion of the basic sciences\, d
 riving or with potential to drive in the future\, socio-economic transform
 ation and development of human societies. \n \nThe Prize consists of a mo
 netary reward of US $250\,000 for each of the two winners. \n \nA gold me
 dal and a diploma are given to each of the recipients.\n \n \n\nhttps://
