DESCRIPTION:UNESCO will convene a Policy Dialogue on the Freedom and Safet
y of Scientists at its Headquarters in Paris on 8-9 June 2026. This Dial
ogue will bring together high-level representatives of Member States\, lea
ding experts\, and members of the global scientific community to address t
he increasing challenges affecting the freedom\, safety and integrity of s
cientific research worldwide. The meeting aims to identify practical and a
ctionable measures to strengthen national frameworks and enhance internati
onal cooperation in support of scientific freedom and the protection of re
searchers.\nThe Dialogue constitutes a key milestone within UNESCO’s Pro
gramme on the Freedom and Safety of Scientists\, which assists Member Stat
es in the implementation of the Recommendation on Science and Scientific
Researchers (RS|SR). In this context\, the event will provide an opportuni
ty to present UNESCO’s newly developed Assessment Tool on Freedom of Sci
ence and Safety of Scientists\, designed to support Member States in evalu
ating existing policies\, identifying gaps\, and reinforcing national syst
ems.\nThe Dialogue will also serve as a platform for evidence-based exchan
ge and peer learning. Participants will hear firsthand testimonies from sc
ientists and experts\, highlighting current risks and challenges\, while a
lso examining effective policy responses and good practices. Drawing on in
sights from Member States’ reporting processes\, discussions will focus
on progress achieved\, persisting challenges\, and priority areas for futu
re action.\nThe meeting builds upon the outcomes of the first online Polic
y Dialogue held in October 2023\, during which Member States articulated t
heir concerns\, needs and expectations regarding threats to the scientific
community. The forthcoming in-person Dialogue seeks to deepen this engage
ment through direct interaction among policymakers\, experts and stakehold
 ers\, fostering a more coordinated and solution-oriented global response.\
 nThe two-day event will include both a public part (Monday\, 8 June\, 10:3
0-12:30)\, open to a broad audience\, and closed-door deliberations reserv
ed for Member States and invited experts from Monday afternoon onwards. Th
ese discussions will address strategies to strengthen national protection
mechanisms\, improve monitoring and reporting\, and advance international
cooperation. \nLearn more about the event here.\nPlease kindly note that
UNESCO is unfortunately not able to provide financial assistance for part
 icipants. We appreciate your understanding.\n\nhttps://indico.un.org/event
