Journalism: Shaping a World at Peace
Freedom of expression and independent media are cornerstones of democratic societies, enabling informed public debate, accountability, and citizen participation. Yet, at a time when democratic norms are under increasing pressure globally, journalists and media actors face growing threats, including political interference, economic precarity, gender-based violence, environmental risks, and digital transformations that reshape the information ecosystem.
The 2022/2025 World Trends Report Journalism: Shaping a World at Peace, produced by UNESCO, is the flagship global assessment of media freedom, journalism safety, pluralism, and media viability. Drawing on global data, regional analysis, and thematic chapters, the Report provides evidence-based insights into the state of freedom of expression worldwide and offers guidance for policy responses grounded in international standards.
The event, co-organized by the Swedish National Commission for UNESCO, UNESCO and International IDEA, will present the Report, situating its findings within the broader global context of democratic decline and emphasizing the critical role of multilateral institutions in safeguarding freedom of expression, strengthening democratic governance, and supporting independent journalism.
