Pursuant to resolution 79/122 of 4 December 2024, the General Assembly, acting on the recommendation of the Sixth Committee, decided, inter alia, to convene the United Nations Conference of Plenipotentiaries on the Prevention and Punishment of Crimes against Humanity (the Conference), to elaborate and conclude a legally binding instrument on the prevention and punishment of crimes against humanity.
The Assembly also decided, inter alia, to convene a Preparatory Committee for the Conference, to meet from 19 to 30 January 2026, and from 12 to 15 April 2027,[1] at United Nations Headquarters in New York.
The Assembly further decided to convene a working group to meet for the entire first session of the Preparatory Committee to facilitate consultations on the draft articles, and to enable Governments to prepare formal proposals for amendments to the draft articles for consideration by the Conference.

At its second session, the Preparatory Committee will consider the organization and methods of work of the Conference, including the rules of procedure.
The PrepCom will meet in the Trusteeship Council Chamber, except for the meetings on 27 January, which will take place in Conference Room 2.
The proposed programme of work foresees plenary meetings of the PrepCom for the morning and afternoon of Monday, 19 January, featuring a general debate, and then meetings of the Working Group foreseen in para. 7 of GA resolution 79/122 on the mornings of 20-23 January, the morning of 26 January, the afternoon of 27 January and the morning of 28 January. On 30 January, the plenary of the PrepCom will hear an oral report of the WG and adopt its report.
Non-governmental organizations in consultative status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) are invited to register up to 5 representatives from each organization for the PrepCom on this portal.
