DESCRIPTION:From collaboration to empowerment: Science diplomacy and capac
ity building through synchrotron science in Africa\nEvent to convene scien
tific leaders\, policymakers and international organizations to explore st
rategies toward Africa’s first regional synchrotron facility.\n \n\n\n\
n\nBackground\n\n\nSynchrotron light sources are among the most powerful t
ools available for advanced scientific research and technological innovati
on. By allowing scientists to examine matter at the molecular and atomic l
evels\, they enable breakthroughs across diverse fields\, including health
 \, agriculture\, materials science\, energy\, and environmental studies. T
hrough their diverse scientific applications and collaborative essence\, s
ynchrotrons serve as engines for sustainable development research\, innova
tion ecosystems\, and regional cooperation. \nThey are also powerful inst
ruments for building scientific capacity\, helping researchers develop adv
anced experimental and analytical skills needed to address pressing challe
nges and drive innovation. \nBuilding on the outcomes of the UNESCO Glob
al Ministerial Dialogue on Science Diplomacy (Paris\, March 2025)\, UNESC
O will convene a high-level event to explore how these large-scale scienti
fic infrastructures can act as platforms for science diplomacy by strength
ening international collaboration\, fostering trust\, and promoting shared
prosperity through knowledge exchange. \nThe event will highlight the im
portance of ensuring African leadership and ownership in developing the co
ntinent’s first synchrotron facility and explore global partnership and
 capacity-building opportunities.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nObjectives\n\n\n\nShowcase t
he role of synchrotron science as a driver of innovation\, sustainable dev
elopment\, and diplomacy.\nExplore pathways toward the establishment of Af
 rica’s first regional synchrotron facility.\nDiscuss interim strategies\
, including the development of an African-dedicated beamline at the Synchr
otron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East (
SESAME).\nDiscuss the opportunities to enhance the scientific and technica
l capacities of African researchers and institutions through training\, mo
bility\, and participation in synchrotron based research.\nStrengthen regi
onal and global partnerships to support African synchrotron and related ca
 pacity-building initiatives.\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
