Consultation convened by the Chair of the Expert Mechanism on the Right to Development with civil society organizations to discuss his recent study on “Climate Justice, Sustainability and the Right to Development”, and explore avenues for collaboration between the EMRTD and CSOs, including ways to disseminate and implement the study’s recommendations.
This study will be presented at the Human Rights Council’s 60th session on 10 September 2025. In the study, the Expert Mechanism has examined how right to development principles can be effectively integrated into established and emerging climate policies to promote climate justice and bolster responses to the climate crisis. It positions climate justice as both a foundational framework for guiding climate action and a central objective in tackling the climate crisis, calling for aligning climate strategies with right to development principals to enhance legitimacy, close accountability gaps, and deliver more equitable and impactful solutions.
