Elections and political campaigns are increasingly mediated by digital technologies in a complex landscape of public and private actors. A number of human rights challenges emerge in the context of digital technologies and elections, including with respect to data collection and processing, the right to privacy and non-discrimination. These questions form part of an ongoing joint project by OHCHR, Privacy International and the Carter Centre. This side event will introduce the ongoing work of this joint initiative and provide an opportunity to present a summary report of the February 2025 half-day expert roundtable which brought together UN human rights experts, international election observers, civil society organizations, academics and other key stakeholders to identify the implications of the use of digital technologies in the context of elections.
