The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from ships through the development of global strategies and regulations. It promotes international cooperation among Member States to implement sustainable practices, improve data collection, and develop low- and zero-emission shipping technologies. IMO's efforts aim to decarbonize the maritime sector, enhance environmental performance, and support global climate goals through collaborative initiatives and regional partnerships.

The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), in collaboration with the International Maritime Organization (IMO), will jointly host a Regional Workshop on Maritime GHG Emissions Data and National Action Plans(here in after GHG workshop) from June 9 to 11, 2025, at the United Nations Conference Centre (UNCC) in Bangkok, Thailand, as part of ESCAP’s Paperless Trade Week 2025, focused on supporting ASEAN countries in establishing effective greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions data collection systems and developing national action plans for decarbonizing the maritime sector.

The Workshop aims to provide a platform for knowledge sharing, technical assistance, and peer learning among Member States of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in support of their efforts to decarbonize the maritime sector in alignment with global goals. By strengthening data management and promoting sustainable shipping practices, these efforts are expected to enhance regional capacity, accelerate the transition to low- and zero-emission shipping, and contribute to global climate goals. Ultimately, this initiative will foster more resilient and environmentally sustainable maritime transport in Asia and the Pacific, supporting regional economic development and environmental protection.
