From May 5 to 7, 2025, Romania and UNESCO will co-host the 32nd World Press Freedom Day Global Conference in Bucharest, Romania. The commemoration will begin on 5 May, with a Day of Action featuring side events organized by partners. The main conference will be held on May 6 and 7.
Titled "Reporting in the Brave New World: The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media," this year’s conference will explore the profound impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on journalism, media, and human rights. Key topics include the transformative role of AI in content generation, information analysis, and dissemination, as well as the ethical challenges, accountability, and issues of mis/disinformation and bias it introduces. Despite these technological shifts, the conference will reaffirm the enduring values of a free, independent, and pluralistic media, as highlighted in the Windhoek Declaration of 1991 and the Windhoek+30 Declaration of 2021.
World Press Freedom Day 2025 will also be the occasion to award the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize , which recognizes and honors the contributions of journalists, particularly those who risk their lives to provide essential information to the public. The ceremony will take place on May 6.
