Inland waterways and river ports in Asia and the Pacific can become a major driving force for sustainable development as eco-friendly means of transport and regional development hubs. However, inland waterway transport remains underdeveloped due to limitations in infrastructure, institutional capacities, human resources, sub-optimal operational environment and other factors.
ESCAP, in collaboration with Mekong River Commission, is organizing a Capacity Building Workshop on Sustainable Inland Waterways Transport Development, to be held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 26 to 27 November 2024 to review the business environment for the inland waterways transport sector, consider collaborative partnerships to maximizing its potential, and discuss concrete measures to promote sustainable inland waterways transport in the Asia Pacific region
The workshop will build upon ESCAP’s recent activities in this area, including below event(6-7 June 2024, International Conference on Sustainable Inland Waterway Transport Development and will aim to consider the activities of Mekong River Commission and its member countries, as well as other countries in the region, in advancing on their regional and national strategies for inland waterway transport development. The event will be held in a hybrid format and will involve experts from relevant organizations as well as national and international experts in the waterborne transport sector.
