In August 2023, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) proclaimed the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development 2024-2033 with UNESCO as the lead agency for its implementation.
One of the key objectives of the Decade is “to build a robust science culture in which everyone has the right to participate in science and enjoy the benefits of scientific progress and its applications in accordance with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights”.
To achieve this objective, a specific focus needs to be put on enhancing scientific literacy for all people, regardless of their geographical location, gender, age or socio-economic status, so help them to understand, evaluate and engage with scientific concepts, processes and evidence; and possess the skills to apply scientific reasoning in everyday life. A global community empowered through scientific literacy is one of the key expected outcomes of the Decade.
To advance the objectives of the UN Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development, UNESCO, CAST and the World Organization for Science Literacy are co-hosting a Roundtable Discussion on Empowering Global Community Through Scientific Literacy in hybrid format, to be held on 24 September 2024 at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris and online.
The key objective of the roundtable is to gather international experts in the field of science communication, science popularization, science education, and science policy to reflect on a possible strategy and actions for promoting science literacy at the global level in the context of the UN Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development.
