The Arab region faces significant challenges in agriculture and water management, intensified by population growth, urbanization, and climate change. With 90% of the region's terrain classified as very arid and 73% of its limited arable land degraded, the urgent need for sustainable resource management is clear. Nearly 362 million people experience water scarcity, making the transition from a "take-make-dispose" model to a circular economy, which emphasizes resource efficiency, reuse, and regeneration, crucial for ensuring a sustainable future for food and water systems.
Recognizing this prioirity, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), in collaboration with the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development (AOAD), and Expertise France is organizing a two-day capacity-building workshop in Amman, Jordan, on October 28-29, 2024. This workshop will convene government experts, practitioners, NGOs, civil society members, and private sector representatives to enhance national stakeholders' capacities in integrating circular economy principles within the agriculture and water sectors. The meeting objectives include:
- Deepening the understanding of circular economy principles in water and agriculture.
- Facilitating the sharing of innovative practices and knowledge.
