Background:
The Higher Education Sustainability Initiative (HESI) is a partnership between several United Nations entities and the higher education community. In the period 2024-2025, the Initiative is chaired by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, UN University, UNESCO International Institute for Higher Education, and the Sulitest Association - a non-profit organization and online platform aimed at improving sustainability literacy for all.
Each year, HESI organizes a global forum as a special event to the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF)[1] – UN’s main platform for the follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at the global level - to highlight the critical role of higher education in achieving sustainable development.
Under the theme "The Future of Higher Education for Sustainable Development" the 2024 HESI Global Forum will feature:
- Multi-stakeholder discussion on the dynamic intersection of education, innovation, and sustainability, considering the expansive impact of AI and other emerging technologies amid the growing concerns on the stagnant progress towards the SDGs.
- Inspiring higher education initiatives from the UN system, HESI action groups and beyond.

The event is open to all registered participants of the HLPF. Please, use this form if you are not registered to attend the HLPF (neither have a valid UN grounds pass) and if you would like to request a Special Events Ticket to attend this meeting in person. Please, note that All arrangements for travel, including visas, accommodation, and transportation, are the responsibility of the participants. The United Nations does not charge fees for participation at the event.
