Meeting on coordinating public health intelligence from sentinel, non-sentinel and other sources of information to improve the detection of and response to respiratory viruses

An Evaluation of Public Health Analytics Workshop is being organised by the Collaboratory team at the WHO Hub for Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence in Berlin, Germany, 8 - 9 October 2024.

Meeting Background:

Evidence-informed decision-making entails identifying, appraising, and mobilizing the best available evidence for safe and effective health policy and programs.  During complex and rapidly evolving pandemics and epidemics, evidence-informed decision-making is crucial for effective and efficient response, yet can be hampered by limits on the quality of the information and the analytical tools available.

Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence (PEI) communities must gather the best models, parameters and data available to produce insights that will ultimately drive policy and responses. Yet these insights are only as strong as the analytics on which they are based, and no framework exists to assess the integrity, relevance and accessibility of these analytical components to deliver public health goods in emergency response. In the absence of a framework, there are substantial risks of valuable resources being channeled to inappropriate analytical exercises during an emergency, or the use of inappropriate analytics that ultimately lead to poor decisions based on poor information.

A framework and criteria for the evaluation of public health analytics for emergency response can help to guide PEI communities, share best-practices, save valuable resources and ultimately support better evidence-informed decision-making and responses.

Objectives:

1. Identify key elements of framework and criteria for evaluation of public health analytics and modeling for emergency response.

2. Define metrics (and targets, where feasible) associated with the evaluation criteria.

3. Obtain input on draft reporting guideline for infectious disease modelling for the Lancet Commission on Strengthening the Use of Epidemiological Modelling of Emerging and Pandemic Infectious Diseases, using the Delphi technique.

Expected Outcomes:

1. Draft key elements of framework and criteria for model evaluation of public health analytics, and accompanying draft metrics.

2. Launch of a digital Model Evaluation Community of Practice to continue the conversations and work of the workshop.

3. Input to the Lancet Commission on Strengthening the Use of Epidemiological Modelling of Emerging and Pandemic Infectious Diseases on reporting guideline for infectious disease modeling
