“The Gender, Poverty and Social Policy Division (GPSPD) will convene the fifth session of the Committee on Social Policy, Poverty and Gender on 2nd and 3rd November 2023, at the United Nations Conference Centre (CR5) in Addis Ababa on the theme of “Building new social contracts in Africa: choices to fulfil development aspirations”. Held biennially, the Committee provides guidance and advice to the division on its work and engagement with member States.
The COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine, climate disasters and debt crisis have reversed the development gains of recent decades. At the halfway point of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, Africa risks missing most of the SDG targets. The deliberations during the fifth session will propose innovative ways to strengthen the social policy agenda and improve the efficiency of public spending. The plenary sessions will be informed by an Issues Paper, focussing on education to frame the discussion. Parallel sessions will be held to showcase the work of the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment, Social Policy, and Urbanization and Development sections.
