Defending human rights should not come at the expense of WHRDs safety and active participation. In a letter addressed to the Member States and the United Nations, 373 feminist organizations from 88, called Secretary-General António Guterres to ensure “that rapid, flexible and targeted resources for women civil society at risk are available.” In his latest report on the situation of women human rights defenders , the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights defenders, in consultation with WHRDs, identified key priorities for Members States, donors, human rights institutions and the international community; such as building a safe and enabling environment for WHRDs, funding their efforts to promote and protect human rights in a continuous, sustainable and effective manner; and publicly recognizing the importance of their equal and meaningful participation.
Building on existing mechanisms, and in collaboration with its UN and INGO partners, in January 2022, thanks to the generous support of Norway, Germany and Albania, the Women’s Peace and Humanitarian Fund (WPHF) launched a new window dedicated to WHRDs from crisis and conflict-affected areas. Under the WPHF Window for WHRDs, rapid, flexible funding and direct logistical support is provided to WHRDs to ensure their safe participation to peace efforts at the community, national, regional, and international levels.
The objectives of the event are to:
1. Amplify WHRDs’ voices and crucial role protecting and promoting human rights and building peace in conflict and crisis-affected countries.
2. Raise awareness on the increasing risks and targeted threats that WHRDs face in conflict and crisis affected countries, and the urgent need to support them in the face of such challenges.
3. Call on the International Community and Member States to accelerate their financial and political commitment to protect and support WHRDs in conflict and crisis affected countries.
