In July 1936, Slovak born Mr. Stefan Lux committed suicide before the General Assembly of the League of Nations in Geneva. This desperate action was aimed to warn the international community about the dangerous rise of antisemitism during the 1930s. While this tragic incident took place in Geneva and triggered vivid reactions at the time, its memory has since faded, and it is not widely known by International Geneva. This event will bring together representatives of diplomatic missions, Jewish community and academic circles in Geneva for a discussion about his life, his action and the wider context. The story of Stefan Lux should remind us of the constant need to counter antisemitism and extremism worldwide and support the work of the international community in combating antisemitism and building resilient and respectful societies.
The event will take place at 12.30 p.m. on 4th November at the Mezzanine, in E Building, 2nd Floor. It is co-organised by the Permanent Mission of Slovakia to the UN and the World Jewish Congress.
