In resolution 72/249 of 24 December 2017, the General Assembly decided to convene an intergovernmental conference under the auspices of the United Nations to consider the recommendations of the Preparatory Committee established by resolution 69/292 of 19 June 2015 on the elements of a draft text of an international legally binding instrument under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction, with a view to developing the instrument as soon as possible. Following the recommendation of the Conference as reflected in its report adopted at its fourth session (A/CONF.232/2022/4), the General Assembly, in its decision 76/562 of 23 May 2022, decided to convene a fifth session of the Conference for ten working days in August 2022. Accordingly, that session will be held from 15 to 26 August 2022 at United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Dans sa résolution 72/249 du 24 décembre 2017, l'Assemblée générale a décidé de convoquer une conférence intergouvernementale sous les auspices de l'Organisation des Nations Unies pour examiner les recommandations du Comité préparatoire créé par la résolution 69/292 du 19 juin 2015 sur les éléments de texte et d’élaborer le texte d’un instrument international juridiquement contraignant se rapportant à la Convention des Nations Unies sur le droit de la mer et portant sur la conservation et l’utilisation durable de la biodiversité marine des zones ne relevant pas de la juridiction nationale, le but étant que l’instrument soit élaboré dans les plus brefs délais. Suite à la recommandation de la Conférence telle qu'elle figure dans son rapport adopté à sa quatrième session (A/CONF.232/2022/4), l'Assemblée générale, dans sa décision 76/562 du 23 mai 2022, a décidé de convoquer une cinquième session du la Conférence pendant dix jours ouvrables en août 2022. En conséquence, cette session se tiendra du 15 au 26 août 2022 au Siège des Nations Unies à New York.
