ECLAC/CEPAL
The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC/CEPAL)
Established in 1948 through ECOSOC resolution 106(VI), the Economic Commission for Latin America (ECLA) - known by its Spanish acronym CEPAL - originally focused on fostering economic development across Latin America. In 1984, following ECOSOC resolution 1984/67, the commission expanded its scope to include Caribbean nations, becoming the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), while retaining its original Spanish abbreviation.
As one of the United Nations' five regional commissions, ECLAC maintains its headquarters in Santiago, Chile. The organization's core mandate encompasses three principal objectives: (1) promoting economic development throughout the region, (2) coordinating development initiatives among member states, and (3) strengthening economic relations both within the region and with the global community. A fourth pillar - advancing social development - was subsequently incorporated into its missionons regional commission to encourage economic cooperation.
